Founded
in April 2003, Torfaen Tigers was the first local
Rugby League Club to be formed in Gwent. In their
first season they were highly successful,
finishing third in the Welsh League and runners up
in the final of Great Britain's amateur knockout
plate competition.
Also
during the inaugural season one of their players,
Daimen Hudd achieved full international honours
featuring in the matches against Russia, England
'A', and Australia. The final whistle heralded yet
another landmark for the club when its coach,
Kevin Weaver, won the top award from the League
Association as "Coach of the Year". In
2004 they built on the successes of the previous
year and qualified for the play-offs of the main
Welsh tournament, going out in the semi-finals to
Aberavon Fighting Irish.
The
Tigers are based at the Pontypool United R.F.C's.
ground at Conway Road in Pontypool, and have been
joined by number of local businesses who have
generously given their support.
With
the seniors boasting a new kit designed by the
players, and training nights and games now being
arranged for younger budding league players, the
club is set to further develop Rugby League within
Torfaen and the surrounding areas. Everyone
associated with the club is enjoying seeing the
club moving forward, and with the 2005 season
about to commence, expectations are high.
