The
Valley Miners (originally the Bulls) were originally
formed by two ex-Swansea University students,
Peter Thomas and Gareth Jones in February 2002.
Having played a number of friendly matches in
2002, it was decided to apply to compete in the
Rugby League Conference (RLC) in order to provide
the opportunity to play Rugby League in Swansea.
The club will build upon the foundations laid
by the University and its founder member and current
Bulls chairman, Dr. Phil Melling who has been
campaining for rugby league in South Wales since
1978.
Today,
the Swansea Valley Miners are established as the
Rugby League team to play for in Swansea and
have just completed their second season in the
Total Rl.com Welsh Conference in 2004. Now playing
out of Ystalafera RFC, with
whom the club has a close working relationship.
The Valley Miners fielded an open-age team
as well as an junior sides in 2004 season
and aim to expand their club structure again in
2005.
