Valley
Cougars Rugby League Football Club was formed in
June 2001 to give young people in the South Wales
Valleys the opportunity to play Rugby League.
Originally, it was called Cynon Valley Cougars and
initially, consisted of junior teams at Under 15s
and Under 14s level. However, it was so popular
that the following year, it was extended to
include Under 13s , Under 14s and Under 16s sides.
The teams play against other local Welsh sides, as
well as a number of matches against teams from the
North. In 2003, the Cougars were founder members
of the newly formed Total RL.com Welsh Conference.
Despite
its short history, the Valley Cougars club has
already gained a reputation as a strong,
progressive and well-respected club, which has
already enjoyed representative honours. This
success was recently recognised by a leading Rugby
League magazine, which wrote:
"Cynon
Valley Cougars [have] already undertaken
some spectacular development work at youth
level, which has produced several Welsh
junior representatives."
(Rugby League World magazine, February
2003, p.77)
